The Importance of Calcium

Water is the most important substance in our diet. Calcium is second. Everyone is familiar with the osteoporosis issue, but calcium is also connected to many other aspects of our health. Every heartbeat starts with calcium, the immune system communicates through the body with calcium, the muscles contract because of calcium, and much, much more. There are also new discoveries everyday regarding calcium’s role relative to cancer and other health issues.

Calcium is one of six electrolytes. The others are magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and chloride. They all play a role in cell structure, muscle structure and energy transport.

Calcium also has a very special and unique job called “calcium signaling.” Calcium signaling is a function where the instructions are “signaled” to the cell. These signals tell the cells to replicate or rebuild themselves, get more nutrition, and other important physiological functions or communications.

If your calcium level isn’t correct, your body’s health will be compromised. In addition, the Institute of Medicine recently considered other bone-related nutrients, including phosphorus, magnesium, and fluoride (IOM 1997). Phosphates make up more than half the mass of bone mineral. In fact, about 85 percent of your body’s phosphorus and 60 percent of the body’s magnesium are found in the skeleton.
